I'm putting pen to paper for the first time on a story that's been percolating for a month, and it was extremely helpful to be reminded that what flows out might be only draft one of five. It doesn't have to be perfect from the start (although I have to say your first opening was pretty darn fantastic). And it's so true that all the elaborate wordsmithing in the world won't hook a reader if there is no forward motion to propel it, a sin which I've been guilty of in the past.
