Covers Galore

Note: The blurb for Beguiling the Beauty has been fixed.

I keep cover pictures that I haven’t yet posted to all possible venues on my laptop desktop.  And for some reason, although every horizontal surface in my house is covered with stuff and I am usually blithely unaware of the clutter, I am very, very neat electronically.  I rarely allow my email inboxes to contain more than 15 entries, and once the number of covers on my electronic desktop reaches a certain critical mass, well, here comes a post.  🙂

Two years ago, I did a post here called Red Dress-Off.  The idea came about as Meredith and I each had a book with a red dress on the cover coming out around the same time.  Guess what?  I’ve another red dress cover, for Beguiling the Beauty.

Blurb:

When the Duke of Lexington meets the mysterious Baroness von Seidlitz-Hardenberg aboard a transatlantic ocean liner, he is fascinated. She is exactly what he has been searching for—a beautiful woman who interests and entices him. He falls hard and fast—and soon proposes marriage.

And then she disappears without a trace…

For in reality, the “baroness” is Venetia Easterbrook—a proper young widow who had her own vengeful reasons for instigating an affair with the duke. But the plan has backfired. Venetia has fallen in love with the man she despised—and there’s no telling what might happen when she is finally unmasked…

Meredith does not have a red-dress cover coming out in 2012.  What she does have, however, is just as synchronicitous.

I wish I could find a bigger picture for At Your Pleasure.  (Meredith has kindly provided a large pic.)  But as you can see, these covers are totally twins separated at birth.  If only one of them were leaning the other way–they’d make a perfect set to display on the wall.

Blurb:

Glittering court socialites and underworld cutpurses agree: Adrian Ferrers, Earl of Rivenham, is the most dangerous man in London. Rivenham will let nothing—not the deepening shadow of war; not the growing darkness within him—interfere with his ambition to restore his family to its former glory. But when tasked by the king to uncover a traitor, he discovers a conspiracy—and a woman whose courage awakens terrible temptations. To save her is to risk everything. To love her might cost his life.

Lady Sarah Percy knows that Rivenham is the devil in beautiful disguise—and that the dark attraction between them is as dangerous as the nightmare in which her family is trapped. But when war breaks out, she has no choice but to place her trust in her dearest enemy—and hope that love does not become the weapon that destroys them both…

Now a bunch of foreign covers.

First up, The Duke of Shadows in complex Chinese.  Is that not a gorgeous cover?  Somehow it escaped my detection during the Duran foreign covers omnibus hunt.  I can excuse myself for that oversight, since Meredith herself didn’t know this edition existed.  The title in Chinese is less The Duke of Shadows, but more The Duke of Illusions.

Vietnamese Private Arrangements. I am again labeled as a New York Times bestselling author. Well, if you say if often enough… 🙂 (Update: Finally got around to Google Translate.  The title in Vietnamese is Covenant of Destiny, which is totally awesome.  Might be my favorite title, foreign or domestic.)

French His at Night. Title translates to The One I’ve Been Waiting For, which I like very much.

And last, but not at all the least, comes Slovene Not Quite a Husband.  I’m not sure what’s going on with the hands, but once I realized that the dress was see through, I couldn’t pay attention to the hands at all.  Am I witnessing a miraculous piece of Brazilian waxing? 🙂

  1. Sherry – Both you and Meredith have “beguiling” covers. I like how the red dress just pops on your cover and the violet background on Meredith’s really complements the white dress. Two years ago the headless heroine was in vogue, now it’s crossed legs. 🙂

Finally, have you announced yet what the theme is in your new trilogy? In other words, what connects them?

FYI: I don’t know if it’s just my computer, but much of the right side of your blurb is cut-off. I can see all of Meredith’s, but not yours.

  2. Sherry, your new cover is GORGEOUS. I love the red dress. They should all be red dresses, in my view! The blurb also sounds fabulous (OCEAN LINER!); I can’t wait to read it.

In the larger version of the AYP cover, you may notice that the cover-model version of Nora (I don’t know where this “Sarah Percy” business is coming from – she hasn’t been called that since I hit page fifty of the first draft) is ALSO stacked. So, to refine your observations on the new cover trend: the dames are stacked, leggy, and determined to flout their mamas’ tiresome admonitions to sit up straight.

  3. Oohlala–your baroness has spent some time in the sun–maybe by the pool during the cruise–also, very pretty bare feet. 🙂 The blurb is cut off at the edges for me as well. What I can read sounds very exciting–very different!

Meredith’s sounds yummy as well– I just re-read A Lady’s Lesson in Scandal and it was as good as I remembered.

  4. OMG Sherry, I think I love BTB already. Shipboard romance + Revenge = Win.

That red gown with the white cuffs. Trying to think which movie I have seen that in? Scaramouche? GWTW?

I do instantly recognize the white/black gown in the new MD. It’s like the A.B.S. knockoff of Leslie Caron’s courtesan gown in GIGI.

  5. Gorgeous cover for BEGUILING THE BEAUTY. As far as I’m concerned, you can’t have too much red. I want her toes painted to match the dress, but that raises a question of historical accuracy. When did women begin using nail polish?

I think these all lovely, and I adore your French cover and title!

    • Aha. I’d never looked it up before. But this is what Wikipedia says:

      >>By the turn of the 19th century, nails were tinted with scented red oils, and polished or buffed with a chamois cloth, rather than simply polished.[2] English and US 19th century cookbooks had directions for making nail paints. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, women pursued a polished, rather than painted, look by massaging tinted powders and creams into their nails, then buffing them shiny.[2] One such polishing product sold around this time was Graf’s Hyglo nail polish paste.[2] Some women during this period painted their nails with clear, glossy varnish applied with a camel-hair brush.[2] When automobile paint was created around 1920, it inspired the introduction of colored nail glosses.[2] <<

Very cool. Now I've got to look up those 19th century nail products.

      • Old-timey apothecary stores (like Caswell-Massey) still sell those buffers and creams. When I was younger (back in the Jurassic period), they used to carry a wider assortment but I think it’s more limited now. I used to buff my nails, but it was more labor-intensive that I liked–polish is easier.

Ancient Chinese and Egyptians used a form of nail coloring/polish, so it’s been around a long time.

        • Believe it or not, the word Jurassic is used in the book (as well as Cretaceous). So now I know that the Jurassic period ended 150 million years ago and feel confident in pointing out that you have misclassified your era. 🙂

  6. Siblings, an ocean liner and revenge – that sounds like an interesting combination. I like reading interconnecting stories because you get invested in the secondary characters and we learn that the couples from prior books are still together. BTW, is it still the Fitzmaurice trilogy or is it now the Easterbrooks?

Have you enjoyed writing your first trilogy? Hopefully, you’ll have a stress-free holiday this time around, and not be busy re-writing like you did with prior books.

  7. The dress on the Slovene cover – it’s a knockout, but Bryony would NEVER wear something like that; she’s a dignified doctor, dagnabbit.

And Meredith’s cover wins the shiny legs contest.

    ROTFL, Sherry!

Seriously though, I LOVE the French title for His at Night..

Your new American covers are both very pretty, and very striking twins separated at birth.

  9. Joyjoyjoy! I love both of the new covers. Very sultry. (Although I wish the BtB cover model hadn’t been beheaded. I’d kinda like that trend to go away sooner rather than later.)

Also really like the Chinese Duke of Shadows. A very different look, but intriguing.

To be honest, tho, I’d buy your books if they were just plain paper with your names on them! Can’t wait for these to be released. Thanks for the tantalizing preview.

    • Hi Susan,

In general, I don’t mind seeing seeing a woman’s face on a book cover (hate seeing a man’s face staring at me, especially if he looks lecherous), but I think the BtB model got her head chopped off for reasons of art, i.e., the heroine is superlatively, spectacularly beautiful. And unless it is Aishwarya Rai herself sitting on that settee, most mortal models fall short. So we thought we’d leave her beauty to your imagination. 🙂

  11. I was looking you up to see if you have new book out. I’m speechless when I saw Private Arrangements in Vietnamese! I actually have 2 copies of Private Arrangement (one is an ARC and the other one, I just had to buy). I actually took a copy of PA to Vietnam in 2009 so this is apropos.

Now I just have to get me a copy somehow… ^__^
